It’s been a full year since the tragic events of 2020 saw us publish our HudsonBec Group commitments to change. This, our fourth update in response to that article — maintains our promise to publicly update every quarter to ensure we are held accountable to those commitments.

So much reflection, education and hard work has happened in the past twelve months, but we have barely scratched the surface of our ambitions to improve what we do as a group.

This quarter has seen no end of commitment from the whole HBG team; none more-so than our 20-strong internal DEI team…

Nine months ago we published our list of commitments to change across the whole of the HudsonBec Group. Since then, we have been working hard to ensure tangible, considered action followed our words. Not just for the short term — but for as long as the group exists.

As promised, three months on from our last update, we are keen to address how we’re doing publicly.

In that last update we said the major areas that we were looking at in early 2021 were a full review of all of our internal policies; to be rewritten and designed for inclusivity…

Improving access to the creative industry for emerging talent needs true collaboration - if you’re working in this space, let’s help each other.

After four years of being ‘Lecture in Progress’ — we re-launched as Creative Lives in Progress last month. We have a new name, a new look, a re-focussed strategy, and a steadfast commitment to our mission of improving access to the creative industry for emerging talent.

If you’ve never heard of us; we do three core things

  1. Demystify creative careers by writing original editorial showcasing people currently working in the industry, from all backgrounds.
  2. Encourage connection between those starting out, and those already in the industry through our monthly digital events; Pep Talk and Portfolio Reviews
  3. Aggregate and promote entry-level…

Almost 6 months ago to the day we published our list of commitments to change across the whole of the HudsonBec Group. Since then, we have been working hard to ensure tangible, considered action followed our words. Not just for the short term — but for as long as the group exists.

Our update back in September across all 11 of our commitments was our initial report, and as promised we want to continue to publicly update every quarter to let everyone know how we’re progressing as an organisation.

As we said last time — we’re pleased to see the…

Whilst Diversity, Equity & Inclusion has always been a focus in our business, when the tragic killing of George Floyd hit our news channels, against a backdrop of so many other unjust deaths, we knew that we as a company had not yet done enough to help change systems of oppression that exist across the board.

Following the news, The HudsonBec Group made a public statement committing to change.

Since then, our entire workforce has displayed a real passion and dedication to improving diversity within the group and more widely across the creative industry, which, as founders of the group…

We’ve spent the past week reflecting on our practices as a company. Here we set out the changes we’re going to make.

Three weeks on from the brutal killing of George Floyd by white police officers in Minneapolis, it’s almost impossible for many of us to even comprehend the pain and anger that many in the Black community are feeling right now, both in the US and around the world.

The fact that, for many, this doesn’t represent a watershed moment, but instead is something that’s dealt with on a daily basis, only serves to deepen the anguish.

As a group of companies we have spent those weeks reflecting on our practices to assess how we can improve when it comes to…

An update on how we’re helping emerging talent understand the creative industry, find opportunities and work in a healthy and fulfilling way.

Three years ago we launched Lecture in Progress. A free resource to empower emerging creative talent with information and first-hand accounts that demystify the day-to-day workings of the creative world.

The platform emerged out of running It’s Nice That for well over a decade and not wanting to ignore the huge volume of requests we were receiving from young creatives looking for advice on how to enter the world of creative work.

In this past 12 months, a lot has happened, and the global context of everything, let alone careers and job prospects, has changed beyond anyone’s wildest predictions. …

The HudsonBec Group Studio

How do we prove our purpose?

Our group purpose at The HudsonBec Group is to “Enable Creativity to Thrive.” You’d be forgiven for being cynical about whether it actually means anything at all in a world saturated with wooly, abstract company purpose statements. Here I’ll try and prove why ours isn’t actually that abstract at all.

At the end of every financial year as well as analysing our performance against the standard metrics; finances, reach, growth etc. we also report back against our purpose. However, doing it in a way that feels tangible and real against such an abstract idea has always been tricky.

So, last…

Over the last ten years as I’ve grown from being a graphic design graduate, into a business owner. During that decade I’ve learnt a few things that I thought some other creative people trying to start or run a business might appreciate, and here they are.

(This is a version of a talk I did for the lovely people at Courier Magazine for Courier Live 2019)

In building The HudsonBec Group, our approach has been to grow slow. To bootstrap — build sustainably and carefully over a decade with straightforward, common sense, business principles.

In that time we didn’t take…

And here’s how we’re getting on…

Two years ago today we launched Lecture in Progress. A free resource to empower emerging creative talent with information and first-hand accounts that demystify the day-to-day workings of the creative world.

In that time, it feels as though the creative industry’s desire to support up-and-coming, diverse talent has only accelerated, further highlighting the need for the platform.

Having run It’s Nice That for over 10 years, we were staggered at the volume of questions we were being asked by young creatives on a broad range of topics about employment in the creative industry. It was clear that a hub of…
